Kim Darling: Self-Governance

  • Michael Phipps Gallery 215 S. 15th Street Omaha, NE USA (map)

Self-Governance re-contextualizes Omaha-based artist Kim Darling’s current and past work at Omaha Public Library. Darling’s colorful icons and synthetic symbols are full of contemporary and historic narratives that are critical of cultural and political institutions/ideologies. As a container for the exhibition, Omaha Public Library is as much apart of the work as a sounding board for larger conversations.

This exhibition explores unconscious and conscious cultural commodification along with imagery associated with powerlessness. With social and political dialogues at a fever pitch, Darling seeks to critically re-analyze the personal self in relation to these larger socio-political topics. Through uncanny juxtapositions, Darling provokes the viewer to consider our abilities to self-govern.

Kim Darling: Self-Governance is organized by Omaha Public Library and curated by Alex Priest.
